Responsible Use of AI in Major Gifts: Enhancing Relationships, Not Replacing Them

Scaling Major Gifts. Strategies, action steps, and ideas for scaling major gifts by Tammy Zonker, Major Gift Expert & Keynote Speaker.

In my nearly 30 years as a major gift expert, I've seen countless technological shifts in our field. But none have been quite as transformative—or as potentially concerning—as the rise of artificial intelligence in fundraising. Today, I want to share my thoughts on how we can responsibly leverage AI to enhance our major gifts programs without losing the human touch that's so crucial to our work.

The AI Dilemma in Major Gifts

I remember when the idea of using data analytics in major gift work seemed revolutionary. Now, we're facing AI tools that can draft emails, predict donor behavior, and even generate personalized content. It's exciting, but I've also seen the anxiety it causes among development professionals.

Many of us worry: Will AI replace the need for skilled major gift officers? Could it jeopardize the authentic relationships we've worked so hard to build? Will donor information be compromised or used unethically?

In my experience, these fears are understandable but largely unfounded—if we approach AI responsibly.

Embracing AI as a Tool, Not a Replacement

I've found that the most successful major gift programs use AI to augment human expertise, not replace it. Here are some strategies I've seen work well:

  1. Leverage AI for prospect research: Use AI-powered tools to quickly analyze vast amounts of data and identify potential major donors you might have missed. But remember, the insights are just a starting point for your personal outreach.

  2. Enhance personalization: AI can help tailor communications based on a donor's interests and giving history. However, always review and personalize AI-generated content before sending.

  3. Optimize timing: AI algorithms can suggest the best times to reach out to specific donors. Use these insights to inform your strategy, but trust your instincts about individual relationships.

  4. Automate routine tasks: Let AI handle data entry and basic reporting, freeing up your time for face-to-face donor interactions.

Real-World Success: The Power of Responsible AI

One organization I worked with implemented an AI-driven donor segmentation tool, which helped them identify 15% more potential major gift prospects in their database. By combining this data with their gift officers' personal knowledge, they increased major gift revenue by 23% in just one year.

The key to their success? They used AI to inform their strategy, not dictate it. Gift officers still made the final decisions on outreach and cultivation based on their relationships and intuition.

Practical Steps for Responsible AI Integration

  1. Develop an AI ethics policy: Clearly outline how your organization will use AI in fundraising, emphasizing transparency and donor privacy.

  2. Invest in training: Ensure your team understands how to use AI tools effectively and ethically.

  3. Maintain the human touch: Use AI-generated insights as conversation starters, not replacements for personal interactions.

  4. Regularly review and adjust: Monitor the impact of AI on your major gifts program and be willing to adjust your approach.

  5. Communicate with donors: Be transparent about your use of AI and how it helps you better serve their philanthropic goals.

As a member of the Fundraising.AI Advisory Council, I highly encourage you to learn more about the Fundraising AI Framework. This framework helps ensure AI is adopted responsibly and ethically in nonprofit fundraising, focusing on maintaining donor trust and supporting charitable missions worldwide.

The Future is Human-AI Collaboration

In my journey, I've learned that the most powerful fundraising tool is still a passionate, knowledgeable major gift officer. AI can make us more efficient and insightful, but it can't replace the empathy, creativity, and personal connection that drive transformational gifts.

I encourage you to embrace AI as a powerful ally in your work but never lose sight of the human element that makes major gift fundraising so rewarding.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences with AI in major gifts. How are you navigating this new landscape? What challenges or successes have you encountered? Let's continue this important conversation in the comments below and learn from each other as we shape the future of our field.

Here's to responsible innovation and even greater impact in our important work!
